Poker has always been about making as much money from the game as possible. For years people flung the saying ‘to be the best, you have to beat the best’. But in all honesty, in online poker we don’t think you have to. The player pools are that grand that you don’t even need to play the best to become profitable. The players you want to look out for are weak, passive, ‘donkeys’ that really have little clue on the basic fundamentals of mobile poker.
Why target the weaker players?
Targeting weaker players is the easiest to make money in mobile poker. Period! People who are worse than you, in any form of life, won’t prosper over you, and this rings true as much in poker than anything. It can almost be thought of as a form of bullying, except you are on all an even keel, before then deciding how much you deposit and then you will pit your qualities against each other. Poor players will, eventually, lose their money!

It’s not uncommon for players to want to go and take ‘shots’ at some of the poker elite, but in the grand scheme of things, these people taking these shots are just the weaker players to the better players. It’s not too dissimilar to the food chain, if you think about it. But, let’s face it, if you never voluntarily sat down with a player better than you, then how can they ever take your money? It’s not quite as black and white as that, granted, but chasing weaker players will be more profitable long term than chasing out players who you know are better than you.
Things to look out for when choosing the easiest mobile poker apps
Targeting the softest poker apps isn’t always the easiest thing to do. There are many to choose from and each has a large, varied pool of players. But there are steps in which you can take to maximize the potential that the majority – and bear in mind not all games or tables at a certain time of day will be full of fish – of games you sit down in will yield a profitable return.
The first thing on our list is that you look out for apps that have a large following away from poker but also some sort of underlying link between say, casino, sportsbooks and their poker room. This basically increases the potential that players aren’t familiar with the game are intrigued to go and find out how it’s done. From here it’s these players that you need to be looking out for and are what we call recreational poker players.
Poker rooms that attract players through their casino and bookmaker operations tend to have a higher percentage of poker fish
These sorts of people will generally have a limited skill set, if any at all, but likely a decent budget in which they are content with losing, should it come to that. Things such as proper bankroll management, a solid fundamentals and even an awareness of how their opponents are playing will likely all be missing. The ability to flick between a series of gambling outlets makes players like this invaluable and often how ‘fresh blood’ infiltrates the game. Three of the best rooms to look out for with this are bet365, 888 and mFortune, who all have large casino followings and a single wallet transaction feature.
Next we want to look at the world of shiny gimmicks involved in poker apps. When PKR first came into the industry it picked up a bucket load of publicity from outside of the industry attracting players with its 3D gameplay making it almost like ‘real life’. These are great for players who possibly aren’t all that into poker, have a reasonable understanding but just simply want to go and see if it’s just like their home game that they play every week with their friends. The same sort of faults will be apparent as our last topic, but the graphical side will likely yield a younger generation of players, often referred to as the ‘PlayStation’ era. The PKR app also has a pretty slow rate of hands per hour, because it’s not really about that, it’s more about the experience, and this in turn tends to put off the more serious grinders looking to get a decent volume of hands in. This leaves the players looking to just deposit $50 on a Friday night and kill a bit of time.
Just as final thought, whilst it’s all well and good saying that this is what you need to look out for from your poker app, there really is no substitute for experience and especially observation at the table. As mobile poker apps don’t allow you to use a HUD (Heads UP Display) – yet – this means that you need to use your brain to decide which players you want to target and which players you want to avoid. You won’t have a massive database of hands played against them to go from; you will need to use your head to make profitable decisions.
So to summarize, here are the 3 main things you should look for...
- Large sports betting or casino player based
- Fancy graphics or gimmicks to attract novice players
- Mobile poker sites that offer small no-deposit "easy come, easy go" bonuses
Which poker iPad apps should you look out for?
These are some of the best iPad poker apps that we have looked at in terms of having some of the most lucrative games going. There will be times when these apps are exception to the rule, but in the long run, any of these will be on the softer side of things.
Carbon Poker Mobile (US Friendly) - Read Review
Carbon is often the forgotten poker room within the industry these days, especially since the remission of US players. But Carbon is actually one of very few poker apps that allow US players. This is probably most interesting because of the fact the majority of US players think poker is illegal for them, whilst this isn’t the case. What this creates at Carbon is a passageway for all US players to play on a mobile device which gives a really wide range of players.
We will admit that Carbon is an interesting inclusion into the list, but the fact that it’s one of very few places where US based poker players can play means that the fish are really, really bad. A word of caution does come with this though and that’s that the upper ends of players are actually quite good. This is why it’s important to be able to evaluate a table as quickly as possible, in order to distinguish the fish.
mFortune Poker - Read Review
mFortune is the only poker room on our list to be a mobile only room. And it’s for this exact reason why we think they are the softest poker room going. Let’s be honest, the amount of full time poker players aren’t going to be grinding on their iPhone, it’s going to be made up of recreational and also players looking to test the waters in the world of mobile poker. mFortune is not only a room which a lot of people will be testing how mobile poker works, but it was also one of the first meaning that the influx of players through their doors will likely be greater than most.
Whilst the games between all three of the rooms we have mentioned, at times are excellent, we just feel that overall, they are better on the mFortune app. Even at off-peak hours games were particularly soft and evenings and weekends just made it a real blast. We would go as far as saying as these are some of the best games in the poker industry, never mind just on the mobile platform.
