BACKGROUND
PKR were one of the biggest innovators in the online poker industry when they introduced 3D poker to the fore. The company since then have gone pretty much unchallenged within the realms of 3D poker but have managed to develop software worthy enough of pushing even some of the more established poker room.

It’s going to be really interesting how well the PKR iPad fairs compared to that of their competitors from a company where these sorts of products should be a walk in the park.

FEATURES
Once you have logged into the PKR app you will be greeted with a very simple and perfectly formed home screen. The first decision you will have to make is whether you are playing with real money or play money. Both are pretty much the same in terms of layout but obviously differ in the games that are on offer. You get three options to pick from which include Find a ring game, Play now and Find a sit and go.
The ring game lobby allows you to then narrow down your search by game, stakes and then number of seats. First up you get three game types to choose from including Texas Holdem, Omaha Pot Limit and Omaha High Lo. The games range from 2c/4c cash games all the way up to $5/$10 which makes for a really good mix for most players. But what happens is that you simply choose a range of limits and then a range of number of seats (heads up, 6 max and full ring) before then being taken to see which table you want to select. Being able to see your table before you sit and then to see how many players are playing at that table is massively plus point for us with the majority apps simply sitting you at any available seat. You can scroll through numerous tables but also it’s interesting to see just how popular this app is with tons of people playing even at off-peak hours.

Upon navigating back to the home page the Play Now button is basically a quick seat tab that allows PKR to sit you at a table without having to use the menus. The app will remember the last stakes and table size you were previously sat at and then simply sit you at the next available seat for those requirements.
The Find a Sit and Go tab is very similar to the cash game section. Again you can choose between Texas Holdem and Omaha variants before selecting buy in levels and number of seats. If there are no tables for the information you have selected then it will quickly prompt you. |
The home screen has one additional menu button that allows you to change things such as your avatar, account information, game options (four coloured deck, sounds etc) inactivity timeout settings, game rules and a heap of information on their terms and conditions and FAQ’s.
TABLES
With an app like PKR the most exciting part was always going to be how the table would perform; and we weren’t disappointed. But before we mention a little bit more on this section of the app, we just want to make you aware of load times. Now throughout the app they are pretty solid, but the time it takes to get from the lobby then sat a table can take quite some time. In fact, there have been cases where it’s taken so long that by the time our table loads the seat that it said was available had now been taken, which is massively frustrating. I guess this makes the ‘Play Now’ tab in the lobby that bit much more important.
Users who are familiar of the PKR interface from their PC based software will be instantly at home with the app as its basically exactly the same. It’s in the same slick 3D layout and includes all the player tricks, shuffles and mannerisms that players of PKR have become so accustomed too. What’s even more impressive is just how smooth the games run. This probably has a lot to do with the processor in the iPad, but still they are pretty much faultless and super slick. But for those of you who are unaware of what PKR poker tables look like then you can expect to find a number of different moods to set your character in, stacks of emotes at the table and even an array of chip shuffles of which you can buy and unlock from the store. OUR VERDICT
We stated earlier in the review how excited we were to see how PKR would convert on to the iPad and also if it would do the brilliant graphics that it’s become so famous for, justice. Well it has! And to be honest, it’s surprised us just how much they have carried across for their PC based software.
The company have always has a problem with shaking the ‘gimmicky’ tag off but if anything this sort of thing fits right into products such as the iPad. There’s no way you can really play a massive number of tables at any one time so the interaction you get from having a single table just works. The app looks great and functions really well, all in all resulting in the PKR iPad app a must try for any poker player.
